The State Disaster Response and Fire Services Department has sent a proposal to the government for the establishment of a training centre in the capital region.

Director General (DG) of Fire Services K. Satyanarayana said the department had requested the government to allot 50 acres for the centre.

At the State-level review meeting of the department held here on Wednesday, the DG directed the Regional Fire Officers (RFOs) and the District Fire Officers (DFOs) to act tough against those who did not follow the safety norms.

Mr. Satyanarayana directed the DFOs to enlighten the public on safety measures, particularly in commercial establishments, cinema halls, warehouses, educational institutions, industries, hospitals, high rise buildings and apartments.

“Instructions have been given to the district-level fire officers and the Station Fire Officers (SFOs) to conduct surprise visits and take action against those who do not possess ‘Fire NOC’ and those who do not renew their licences.”

Speaking to newsmen later, Mr. Satyanarayana said 19 Assistant DFOs had been promoted as DGOs, 27 Leading Firemen and Driver Operators were elevated to the SFO cadre and five DFOs as RFOs.

“The government gave permission for recruitment of 55 driver posts and a report would be submitted to the government on the vacancy position soon,” the DG said.

Demo presented

Later, Mr. Satyanarayana along with director K. Jayaram Naik and additional director P. Venkata Ramana watched the demo of the fire-fighting equipment presented by various companies. Many firms from Mumbai, Bangalore and other cities displayed cutters, rams, forcible entry tools, air bags and other equipment.

Fire personnel were taught the operation of the equipment and the way to rescue people from burning vehicles and high-rise buildings, said Mr. Naik. Latest equipment would be given to all the fire stations in the 13 district headquarters, the director added.
