Employees sulk, elders happy

The Union Budget evoked mixed reactions from salaried class and senior citizens.

“Last year, the tax exemption was increased to Rs. 2.5 lakh from Rs. 2 lakh, providing a tax relief of Rs. 50, 000. Similarly, there was expectation that tax exemption would be raised to Rs. 3 lakh or Rs. 3.5 lakh,” said P. Mallikarjun Rao, a private sector employee.

“There is nothing much for the salaried class to cheer about . The government has brought down tax for corporates, but there are nothing encouraging for the middle class,” said P. Panduranga Varaprasada Rao, general secretary of AP Teachers’ Federation. Meanwhile, senior citizens sounded a happier lot. “It is good that the government has announced pensions to people aged 60 and above from low income groups. Creating a welfare fund for senior citizens is a welcome move,” said M. Venkateswara Rao, secretary of District Senior Citizens Welfare Association.
