Elaborate security put in place for Municipal Corporation polls

Elaborate security arrangements have been put in place for elections to the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) to be held on Sunday.

2,500 policemen

Nearly 2,500 policemen and women are being deployed across the 59 divisions, and there will be 11 special striking and 21 striking forces quelling any trouble during the polling.

Almost the entire top rung of the city police will be supervising security measures and will swing into action if any major incident takes place.

Two Deputy Commissioners of Police, one Additional DCP, six Assistant Commissioners of Police/DSPs, 32 Inspectors, 79 Sub-Inspectors, 294 Assistant Sub-Ispectors/Head Constables, 915 constables and 600 home-guards in addition to personnel from the City Armed Reserve will facilitate the smooth conduct of elections.

Frisking of people and vehicle-checking are being done at eight check-posts to curb smuggling of cash, gold and silver articles and other objects of material allurement.

Police have so far bound over 1,644 persons who are likely to cause disturbance, besides seizing 275 weapons of various types.

Besides, unaccounted cash amounting to Rs. 1.13 crore was seized and 57 liquor cases were booked.
