With just five days left for the appointed day, transport department has identified eight locations to set up cross border check posts between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh as vehicular traffic between the two States will be considered inter-state movement from June 2.

Currently (undivided State of Andhra Pradesh) there are 12 check posts, of which six of them-- Thetakunta, Garikapadu, Renigunta, Shapur, Kamareddy and Palvancha -- are internal check posts. In the wake of State bifurcation, transport department authorities have identified eight locations for setting up new cross-border check posts.

While the existing internal check posts at Garikapadu in Krishna district and the one at Palvancha in Khammam district will be upgraded into new check posts, the one at Shapur in Ranga Reddy district would be shifted to Alampur crossroads in Mahabubnagar district.

The remaining six will come up near Kurnool outskirts and Sunnipeta in Kurnool district, near Macherla and Dachepalli in Guntur district, one at Tiruvuru in Krishna district, near Jeelugumilli in West Godavari and near Chintoor and Maredumilli in East Godavari district.

Authorities stationed at these check posts will inspect vehicle documents, besides verifying payment of road tax and issuing local travel permits for short duration to tourist buses and cabs. The department proposes to deploy specialised staff at these check posts for effective monitoring and is emphasising on the need to increase the sanctioned staff, said a senior official.

One acre of land would be required for establishing each check post, which will be equipped with computers, generators and a weigh bridge. Nearly Rs.15 lakh would be spent on setting up each check post, besides land acquisition cost, he explained.
