Kanakadurga the presiding deity of Indrakeeladri in Vijayawada, will be adorned as Sri Durga Devi on the seventh day of Navaratri festivities on Tuesday.

The presiding deity Kanakadurga atop Indrakeeladri will appear as Sri Durga Devi on ‘Ashthami thithi' on seventh day of Navaratri on Tuesday. It symbolizes victory over evil. Holding weapons such as sword, spear, chakra, her vehicle (vaahana) is a tiger (sardoola vahini) and is fierce in her looks.

She is called Durga as she killed demon Durgamudu or Durgasura, son or Ruru. She is the first form of aadi prakriti pancha maha swaroopas. She is considered as the most powerful goddess, mother of the universe, she is behind creation, preservation and destruction of the world. Her description is found in many religious texts, mantra and tantra books. Adi Sankaracharya suggested worshipping her with Lalitha ashtottaram instead of Durga ashtottara so that she would appear in most peaceful form—Lalitha or Kanakadurga.

If durga is worshipped one can easily par the ocean of bhava (cycle of birth and death). Worshipping the Goddess frees the sadhaka from enemies, wars and other difficulties.
