The Southern Power Distribution Company of Andhra Pradesh Limited has given citizens some tips on how to save energy and lower their electricity bills.

Divisional Electrical Engineer M. Siva Prasad Reddy has sent notices to the presidents of various apartments on how to educate the residents. One must ensure that clothes put out for drying in balconies of terrace are clipped properly so that they would not fall on the overhead power lines. He has also advised the residents to pay bills promptly to avoid penalties.

With regard to saving of energy, he has advised avoidance of the usage of an elevator while going down which results in 50 per cent of electricity saving. Lights in corridors must be switched on only from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. and residents must be encouraged to switch off their refrigerators from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., he said.

The residents must be educated to switch off lights, fans, and television sets when not in use and opt for natural ventilation instead of air conditioners. In case of using an air conditioner the temperature must be set at 24 degree or 25 degree Celsius.

He has further advised the public to avoid using microwave ovens, water heaters, and electric cookers and instead encourage the use of solar heating and cooking. He has asked the apartment presidents to go for float switches for motors which automatically switch off when the overhead tank gets filled.
