CPI ready for merger of Left parties: Suravaram

April 30, 2015 03:36 pm | Updated November 16, 2021 07:46 pm IST - VIJAYAWADA:

The Communist Party of India (CPI) is ready to sort out issues for merger of the Left parties, party general secretary Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy has said.

“We are ready for discussions. We will wait till a positive response comes from other Left parties for merger,” he said. The statement comes in the light of the intensified efforts by the two Left parties CPI and the CPI (Marxist) towards reunification of the Left parties that would pave way for the widening of the base of the Left parties.

Participating in a Meet-the-Press programme organised by Andhra Pradesh Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ) here on Thursday, Mr. Reddy said that he was hopeful that the unity among the parties could be achieved through a united struggle against the ``anti-people’’ and ``anti-working class’’ policies being pursued by the State and Central governments.

Replying to a query, he admitted that the party, of late, could not take up sustained struggles seeking resolution of the problems faced by the people. The issue figured in the deliberations of the party’s national conference held at Puducherry recently where it was resolved to focus on result-oriented struggles in the coming days.

About landslide victory of Trinamool Congress in West Bengal’s civic polls, he said, “It’s not an election. They (Trinamool Congress candidates) won by 100 per cent rigging. Violence also took place in several areas. As Trinamool Congress’s image is fading fast, the activists resorted to violence during the elections,” he said.

The senior CPI leader criticized the Centre for dividing people on communal lines with the help of Sangh Parivar taking up programmes like ‘Ghar Wapsi’ campaign. The party was strongly opposing the amendments to the Land Acquisition Act which was aimed at doling out concessions to the corporates at the expense of farmers.
