Amaravati, the new capital of Andhra Pradesh, should be built with funds to be made available by the Central government as promised at the time of bifurcation. The services of indigenous contractors and products of Visakha Steel should be utilised for the purpose.

This was the resolution adopted at the Congress extended executive committee meeting here on Saturday.

Briefing the media after the meeting, APCC president N. Raghuveera Reddy said that the Congress was totally opposed to selecting contractors for construction of the capital using the Swiss Challenge method. He said any agreement that the government had already entered into should be cancelled immediately. The committee also passed a resolution favouring a complaint to the Chief Election Commissioner about the promises made by the Telugu Desam and its ally the BJP at the time of elections.

“When the State Election Commission wrote a letter to the TDP asking whether it could fulfil all the promises made in the election manifesto, the party gave an affidavit saying that it would,” Mr. Raghuveera Reddy said.

Since most of the promises were not fulfilled even 25 months after coming to power, the Election Commission would be asked to “derecognise” the parties, he said.

‘Irregularities in

pushkar works’

Alleging that the ruling Telugu Desam Party was indulging in “unabated corruption,” the Congress resolved to launch a fight against it.

A seven-member committee, with Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council C. Ramachandraiah as chairman and presidents of Guntur, Kurnool, and Krishna districts and Vijayawada, Guntur, and Kurnool towns as members, was constituted by the committee to investigate into the alleged irregularities in the Krishna Pushakaram works.

Private Bill on SCS

A decision was also taken to go to New Delhi to enlist the support of Rajya Sabha members of all political parties for the private Bill on Special Category Status introduced by K.V.P. Ramachandra Rao coming up for voting on July 22.

The district and civic administrations would not be allowed to demolish places of workshop under the pretext of developing ghats and roads for the Krishna Pushkarams, the PCC president said.

Mr. Ramachandraiah, former Union Ministers J.D. Seelam and Killi Krupa Rani, and former MLA Malladi Vishnu were present.
