The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) has embarked upon a new mission to develop a comprehensive mobility plan (CMP) for the city and its neighbouring villages. The corporation has invited RFP (request for proposal) from the government empanelled consultants to prepare the plan.
The corporation is planning to conduct Traffic and Transportation Study in detail for the city for taking up transportation infrastructure projects to ease the existing congestion level. The objective of the CMP was to provide a long-term strategy for a desirable mobility pattern of the city. The study area includes the city and the local planning area and the planning horizon was 20 years. The short and medium term target years are 5 and 10 years from the base year, 2013, respectively, say VMC officials.
Villages to be included
The study would explore all possible modes of transportation including canal navigation. Three canals are passing through the city, and the corporation authorities are contemplating reviving and improving the canal navigation, which existed a few decades ago.
The possibility of tramways, light rails and metro rails, etc would also be explored. The VMC is planning to include neighbouring villages in the city study as the people’s movement is high and ever increasing. Unless these villages were included, the traffic and transportation facilities would be incomplete, say officials.
As the demand for work and business centres, shopping complexes, tourist attractions and for parking space increases, a survey of vehicles, etc. would also be conducted.
A manual count of each vehicle type, where there is significant on-street parking, would be done.
The CMP would cost between Rs.40 lakh and Rs 50 lakh. The Government of India and the VMC would share it in 80:20 ratio.
The CMP has to be prepared in six months after the selection of the consultant, sources say.
