Collector B. Lakshmi Kantham, Deputy Commissioner of Police Kanti Rana Tata and Deputy Transport Commissioner E. Meera Prasad led an awareness rally on wearing of helmets, from the Collector’s camp office here on Friday.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Kantham said wearing of helmets and seat belts had been made compulsory by the road safety committee from September 1 to bring down the number of fatalities in accidents, in compliance with the Supreme Court directives.

The dealers had been instructed to sell bikes along with helmets as provided under rule no. 138 (f) of the Motor Vehicles Act. The Police and Transport Departments have been spreading awareness about the helmet rule and it was up to the people to be self-disciplined in that regard, he said.
