The Indian Coast Guard was planning to 150 ships and 100 aircrafts to its existing fleet making it one of the most formidable marine forces in the world, Director General of Indian Coast Guard Vice Admiral Anurag G. Thapliyal said here on Tuesday.
The Indian Coast Guard was manning 7,500 km of coastline across the country safeguarding maritime interests adjoining the Indian Peninsula ever since it was constituted in 1977, Vice Admiral Thapliyal said. A Coast Guard Academy to train personnel had been proposed at Kannanur in Kerala, he said.
The DG pointed out that ever since the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, the Indian Coast Guard had strengthened its surveillance along the coastline. “We cannot assume that terrorists will always take “the sea route in Mumbai. The maritime defence system India has is the best line of defence and we will further strengthen it,” he said.
