The district police have mooted several people-friendly measures, including doing away with rope parties and utilising the services of task force personnel in regular law and order issues.

Chittoor Superintendent of Police Ghattamaneni Srinivas told the media that use of rope parties in bandobust duties and during VVIP programmes would be minimised. “Presence of minimum police force coupled with public awareness on self-discipline will surely produce good results,” he said.

The SP said the department had got tremendous response from political leaders and people after the rope parties were not used during Chief minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s recent visit to Tamballapalle and Chittoor. “Rope party personnel have been given orientation to be people-friendly and strictly desist themselves from using force when it is not required. Our objective is to make people self-disciplined,” he said.

Meanwhile, instructions have been issued not to utilise the services of armed task force in regular law and order issues. “The regular police will attend to the issues related to local agitations, road blockades and bandhs, while the task force will be strictly limited to combing operations related to red sanders smuggling,” he said.

The official said that with the cooperation of village and mandal level committees, measures would be initiated to limit the presence of police in mass events like jatharas (village festivals). “This will enable them to realise the limits of their revelry and cooperate with us,” he said.
