Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) Traffic and Sports Committee organised ‘Sankranti Sambaralu’ at Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation (IGMC) stadium here on Thursday.

The corporation authorities conducted competitions for schoolchildren in various rural sports such as thokkudu billa, oppala guppa vayyari bhaama, karra billa, bongaram (top) and kite flying.

Politicians take part

The boys actively took part in kite flying and spinning their tops.

The children spread their palms to catch a spinning top, and twisted their wrists to hit a billa with the karra. Vijayawada (East) MLA Gadd Rammohan Rao tried his hand in Thokkudu billa, a game where hopping and intuition are the keys to success. Women corporators also took part in the celebrations. Voppula-guppa, which is essentially a feminine game, was another interesting sport played at the celebrations. Vijayawada (Central) MLA Bonda Umamaheswara Rao, Mayor Koneru Sridhar, Deputy Mayor Gogula Venkata Ramana Rao, Committee chairman Chennupati Gandhi, Education and Cultural Committee chairman Kaku Mallikarjuna Yadav, sports cell incharge Z. Srinivasa Rao, Deputy Educational Officer K. Durga Prasad and others were present.
