Cell phone tower opposed

July 24, 2011 11:43 am | Updated 11:43 am IST - VIJAYAWADA:

The CPI city unit has condemned the attack on AIYF activists by some miscreants for opposing the construction of a cell phone tower on Annadanam Samajam road in Arandalpet.

CPI city secretary K. Subba Raju said the local people were opposing the cell phone tower in their locality. The building owner went back on his assurance that the tower would not be constructed. The AIYF activists, who expressed their solidarity with the local people, were attacked by some miscreants. The people gathered in large numbers upon learning that the miscreants attacked a youth for opposing the tower. Jr. Lanka Govindarajulu was seriously injured in the attack, he said adding he was undergoing treatment in government hospital.

AIYF city general secretary N. Sambasiva Rao said the Annadanam Samajam residents lodged a compliant with the corporation. The officials, however, told them that the cell phone management has a court direction. The corporation officials' argument was baseless and false, he said. The AIYF would launch an agitation if the miscreants were not arrested immediately, and stop the cell phone tower construction, he said.
