The announcement of poll results on Friday led to a sudden rise in demand for flowers, sweets and firecrackers in the city, as political activists flocked these shops to celebrate the victory of their party candidates.

While supporters greeted the winning candidates with garlands, others celebrated the occasion by bursting firecrackers.

Party workers and well-wishers of the candidates, who won the elections, made a beeline to sweet shops and flower markets soon after the Election Commission declared the results. There were only a few customers, who visited these shops till afternoon and as the day progressed, buyers started increasing significantly.

“We have witnessed heavy rush from the evening requesting for sweets packets. Most of them preferred to buy kalakand sweet costing Rs.360 per kg,” said Kishore of Swagruha Sweets.

It was a hectic day for flower merchants with orders pouring in for making special garlands for their leaders. Many purchased three-foot high garlands convenient to congratulate leaders who emerged victorious after counting. “We charged the price according to type of flowers used for making garlands,” explained Chinni of Sai Orchids.
