Backward Classes’ welfare associations picketed the office of the Andhra Pradesh Commission for Backward Classes (APCBC) here on Friday protesting against the categorisation of Kapus as a backward community. The protest was organised under the aegis of the BC Hakkula Parirakshana Samiti. They raised slogans against the government for trying to appease the Kapus and insisted that their inclusion in the list of BCs was detrimental to the other marginalised communities.

A large number of protesters from across the State reached the city as part of the ‘Chalo Vijayawada’ programme and voiced their concern against the move. They asserted that it was in violation of the Constitutional provisions. They demanded that the government withdraw its decision to avoid large-scale agitations.

Later, a delegation of the BC associations submitted a memorandum to officials of the APCBC seeking cancellation of the survey being done by the Justice Manjunath Commission for ascertaining the socio-economic status of the Kapus, whose violent protest in Tuni brought the issue of reservation for them into limelight.
