The bankers in Krishna district are not extending loan to the poor and are giving loans only to the rich, alleged MLAs at the District-level Review Committee meeting of nationalised banks here on Friday.

Vijayawada Central MLA Malladi Vishnu said the nationalised banks were not extending loans to the urban poor. The elected representatives were not being informed about the priority sector lending to the urban poor, he said.

Mylavaram MLA and Telugu Desam district president Devineni Umamaheswara Rao said tenant farmers, who were in majority in the district, hardly got loans, input subsidy or compensation.

Nandigama MLA and TDP leader Tangirala Prabhakar charged the bankers with catering only to the rich. The poor who were dressed in tattered cloths were being ill treated by bankers, he alleged. The MLA became highly emotional while talking at the meeting and began to shout in an agitated manner.

District Collector Buddhaprakash M. Jyothi pacifying the MLA narrated the story of Infosys Narayana Murthy’s driver. When Mr Narayana Murthy asked his driver about his experience with an ATM when they were first installed the driver said, “the ATM doesn’t know I am a driver,” the Collector said. After narrating the story the Collector said it was a social problem. Society still judged people from their appearances. Lead Bank Manager R.V. Narasimha Rao assured to the MLA that all were equal to bankers.

Reserve Bank of India AGM Ranga Rao said primary aim of the DLRC was to keep the elected representatives posted about the priority sector loans. Responding to the complaint that some bankers were not providing data in time, he said the RBI ensure that bankers sent the necessary data to the lead bank in time.

The Collector said the agenda of the meeting which was held once in three months should be sent to the elected representatives at least three days in advance.

Earlier Mr Umamaheswara Rao complained to the Collector that he was given agenda copy after actually arriving at the meeting.
