A corporation with a corpus of ₹1,000 crore should be established during the budget session of Assembly for the welfare of the economically backward segment of the Arya Vysya community, said Jayanti Venkateswarlu, chief of the Andhra Pradesh Arya Vysya Mahasabha, here on Sunday.

Participating in an agitation launched at the Dharna Chowk, he said that the community constituted 10 per cent of the State’s population and it was going through hard times.

Mr. Venkateswarlu said that during his meetings with community leaders across the 13 districts, he had come to know about the problems faced, especially by small traders.

He said that as it was listed a forward community, the economically backward sections were suffering.

“On par with the BC, SC, ST, minorities and other corporations established for Brahmins and Kapus, the Arya Vysya community should also get a corporation,” he added

He said Rajya Sabha member T.G. Venkatesh had already met the Chief Minister during his visit to Kurnool and submitted a proposal for setting up a corporation. A delegation led by community leaders Siddha Raghava Rao and Sriram Rajagopal (Tatayya) met TDP general secretary Nara Lokesh and gave a representation.

“But so far there is no response. We also demand proper representation in the political hemisphere by the political parties,” he said.

Mr. Venkateswarlu said that the agitation would be intensified at mandal, village and district levels until the corporation was achieved.

Community leaders, women and volunteers from various districts participated in the agitation.
