‘Appoint officials in districts to promote exports’

September 18, 2014 12:39 am | Updated 12:39 am IST - VIJAYAWADA:

BJP State president K. Haribabu suggested to the government constitute an Agricultural Products Export Promotion Council and appoint officers in each district to promote exports.

These, he said, were extremely crucial for transforming AP into a developed State on a par with other progressive ones.

Addressing the party’s first State Council meeting here on Tuesday, Mr. Haribabu said the government should make it a point that development of seaports without having fishing harbours attached to them would antagonise the fishermen community as it had happened at the time of establishing Gangavaram port.

He said that most of the 32 seaports in Gujarat were functional while only four out of 14 in A.P., which has nearly 1,000 km-long coastline, are languishing in the conceptual stage.

The government should take steps for establishment of a Maritime Development Board to take care of the seaports. It has to at the same time expand the airport at Gannavaram. Air and seaport connectivity were crucial for the State’s growth post-bifurcation, he asserted. Mr. Haribabu welcomed the state’s initiative for getting 24/7 power supply for which it inked an agreement with the Ministry of Power in Hyderabad.
