Let's Unite for Green Tomorrow (LUGT), an NGO started by a group of enthusiastic engineering and other professional youth, will observe Earth Hour on Saturday along the Godavari river bund. Under this programme, non-essential lights will be put off for one hour from 8.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. along the bund to save energy.
In a statement on Friday, LUGT members said that the drive would be observed on in 5,000 cities across the globe, and LUGT had taken an initiative as far as Andhra Pradesh was concerned in cities like Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Rajahmundry and Bhimavaram.
Earth Hour is a symbolic move to tackle climatic crisis and global warming by switching off lights for one hour on the last Saturday in the month March.
Concerted effort
It was first observed in 2007 at Sydney, when some 2.2 million households and business establishments put off lights. In 2008, some 50,000 participated. In 2009, it was extended to 80 countries. Noted actor Amir Khan led the initiative in our country last year.
LUGT appealed to all citizens of Rajahmundry to rise to the occasion and do their bit to protect our planet.
