A Sudanese student, pursuing B. Tech in the Nova College of Engineering and Technology near Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh, was fatally stabbed, allegedly by his junior and fellow national, late on Monday night. The incident followed a dispute over money.

The deceased, Mohamed Elmgtaba Abdelgabar Hussein Osman, a second year student of Electronics and Communications Engineering, celebrated his 25th birthday on January 20. He was staying with a group of fellow nationals in a rented house on Ferry Road.

“Around 11.45 p.m. on Monday, the accused, Allaeldeen Ibrahim Hamed Mahmoud, 22, who also stayed in the same house, allegedly began demanding the money which he lent to Elmgtaba a couple of weeks ago. In a fit of rage, Allaeldeen picked up a kitchen knife and allegedly stabbed Elmgtaba in the abdomen.

“Soon after the incident, room-mates rushed the victim to a nearby hospital run by a medical college, which reportedly denied him admission. He was then rushed to the Andhra Hospitals, where doctors pronounced him brought dead,” said Ibrahimpatnam Inspector D. Chavan. Based on the complaint by Badreldin Abdulla Mohammad, room-mate of Mohammad Elmgtaba, the police registered a case of murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code and took the accused into custody.

It is said that the two had altercation over money a couple of times earlier.

Embassy informed

The incident came as a shock to the other room-mates and village residents.

“We are shocked at the incident and never expected the issue to end this way. We are waiting for help from our Embassy,” said Adib Ali, a student of B. Pharmacy at the Nova College of Pharmaceutical Education and Research.

Delay in access to hospital

Soon after the incident, roommates rushed the victim to the nearby hospital run by a medical college, and was reportedly denied admission. He was then rushed to Andhra Hospitals in Bhavanipuram, which is located nearly 12 km from Ibrahimpatnam, but died on the way.

“We received information at 2.30 a.m from the police about the incident. The victim was rushed to nearby medical college and was later shifted to Bhavanipuram as the former hospital did not admit him,” said a college representative.

The college management declared a holiday to pay condolence to the victim. College Principal A. Srinath said Elmgtaba was a lateral entry candidate and was admitted to second year directly. “The accused student was in the first semester of first year ECE and we are not much familiar with their behaviour or academic capabilities,” he said.

Panic among locals

Meanwhile, the incident trigged panic among the locals of Ferry Road where increasing number of foreign students, particularly from Africa, are staying.

About 70 foreign nationals, including women, pursuing engineering, pharmacy and other courses in Nova group of institutions stay in private homes in the village.

The police have informed the embassy about the incident. The deceased was a native of Bahri village of Khartoum State in Sudan.
