Father tries to sell kids, arrested

He wanted to have more drinks by selling them at a liquor shop

In a shocking incident, a man attempted to sell his two children to get money for purchasing liquor. Police foiled his bid and rescued the children.

“The two kids are safe. We offered them food and handed them over to their grandparents. Instructions have been given to the police to register a case against the accused,” Police Commissioner D. Gautam Sawang said.

The accused Syed Hasman, a native of Visakhapatnam, was addicted to alcohol and had a quarrel with his wife.

He came to Vijayawada on Thursday along with his children – Syed Shameer, 6, and Syed Haman, 4, – and was loitering in the city.

Alert came from woman

On Friday, he had liquor and befriended one D. Narasimha Rao, whom he met at the liquor shop. Hasman and Narasimha Rao put up the two children for sale and were asking the public to take them and give them some money.

Based on the information provided by an unidentified woman, a police team led by SI Murali of Krishnalanka station rushed to the spot and took the duo into custody and rescued the children, said South Zone Assistant Commissioner of Police K. Srinivas.

“The informant alerted the police by calling ‘Dial 100’ to the Control Room, and the South Zone police responded quickly and secured the two kids,” said Mr. Sawang and appreciated the police for rescuing the children.

“A case has been registered under Section 81 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, against the accused and the two men have been taken into custody,” the ACP told The Hindu .

District Child Protection Officer Ch. Vijay Kumar of the Women Development and Child Welfare Department, said a person who tried to sell or purchase children was liable for five years’ rigorous imprisonment besides ₹1 lakh penalty, under Section 81 of the Juvenile Justice Act.
