VIJAYAWADA: The Andhra Pradesh Police is planning to launch Microsoft-Amaravati Initiative, a programme aimed at data analysis by using latest technology.

The programme will help detect various crimes easily. It will also help monitor cyber offences, track criminals, prevent road accidents, and maintain e-surveillance at major events and at busy junctions across the State.

“A team of six police officers will visit Microsoft Corporation’s headquarters at Redmond in Washington in February this year. The officers will study the latest technologies and requirements for bringing in reforms in investigation,” said Director-General of Police (DGP) N. Sambasiva Rao.

Technical Consultant to the AP Police K.P.C. Gandhi said that the team would learn big data collection on finger and palm printing, biometrics, video and audio recognition, and revised forensic technology.

He said that Forensic Science Laboratories (FSLs) and Clues Teams would come up in all districts. Centres of Excellence woud be set up at six places in the State, Mr. Gandhi said.

Mr. Sambasiva Rao said that 300 police personnel from the Crime Investigation Department (CID), Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau (SIB), and Counter Intelligence (CI) would be trained in cracking cyber crime cases and detections under the IT Act and related cases.

“Special cells such as CI and SIB in the State are the best in India. Emergency Response Teams will be set up in all districts soon,” the DGP said.

Ganja smuggling has become an organised crime and smugglers from neighbouring States are involving in the racket.

The contraband is being smuggled in huge quantities from East and West Godavari and Visakhapatnam districts.

“A separate cell would be set up to stop smuggling of the contraband. Police will soon organise a coordination meeting with personnel of Prohibition and Excise, Government Railway Police, Narcotics Control Bureau, and Directorate of Revenue Intelligence to discuss issues such as illegal ganja cultivation, notorious smugglers, modes of transportation, and mediators in ganja smuggling,” said Mr. Sambasiva Rao.

“An app will be developed to prevent road accidents in West Godavari district. Voice alert mechanism and e-surveillance system will be introduced to caution those passing by accident-prone areas,” the DGP said.
