223 booked in drive against drunken driving in two hours

169 bikes, 33 cars, 18 autos and three lorries seized

The Traffic and the Law and Order police on Sunday night registered 223 cases against those driving vehicles under the influence of alcohol and seized their vehicles. The drive was conducted at 11 places from 9.30 p.m. to 11.30 p.m., said in-charge Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP-Traffic), T. Ramprasad Rao.

Producing the accused before the media at the Police Parade Grounds here on Monday, Mr. Ramprasad said the police seized 169 bikes, 33 cars, 18 autos and three lorries in the drive. The accused would be produced in the court, he said.

Additional DCP (Traffic) T.V. Nagaraju said the police registered cases against 2,066 persons on drunk and drive charges, and collected ₹29.53 lakh penalties. The court awarded imprisonment to 120 persons, he said.

Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs) Murali Krishna, Sravan Kumar and Ramesh, who monitored the drive, said even the auto drivers are driving after consuming alcohol and asked the public to be vigilant and check the condition of the driver while boarding the autos.
