Social media is agog with a message explaining the reason for the unprecedented heat waves witnessed by the 13 districts of Andhra Pradesh for the past couple of days.

It said ‘equinox phenomenon,’ which occurs owing to the Sun directly positioning above the equator line, is the reason for the hot spell, especially between 12 noon and 3 p.m.

The message was forwarded in Whatsapp, Facebook and Twitter and also in the short message service (SMS) in the mobiles.

The message said that exposure to Sun would lead to sunstrokes and could lead to dehydration. It also had general precautions such as intake of fluids to keep hydrated and regular checking of blood pressure. More fruits, less meat and frequent cold showers are the other suggestions made in the message.

Transition period

Director of Vizag-based Cyclone Warning Centre K. Ramachandra Rao said that temperatures would go up by three-four degree Celsius in the next few days.

“The weather, in general, is witnessing a transition period and these hot spells are part of March and April months. In Vizag, temperature will hover around 38 degree Celsius, but in the other districts heat wave conditions will prevail,” he said.
