NIT brings out booklet on admissions

December 05, 2014 09:25 am | Updated April 07, 2016 02:52 am IST - TIRUCHI:

The National Institute of Technology (NIT-T), Tiruchi, here has come out with a booklet to create awareness among schoolchildren, especially those from rural areas, to pursue higher education in NITs and Indian Institute of Technologies through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE).

The booklet, meant for Plus Two students, explains the importance of the premier institutes and serves as a guide to help the children prepare for the entrance exams of these institutes.

The booklet was released by Jayashree Muralidharan, District Collector at the Government Girls Higher Secondary School, at Manachanallur on Thursday.

Explaining the objective of bringing out the booklet to a gathering of 150 children — both boys and girls at the school, G. Swaminathan, Registrar, NIT, said the institution had taken it up as a social responsibility as part of Pragyan 2015 — Technomanagement festival.

He said the booklet would be sent to 216 schools in Tamil Nadu online.

Ajay Yeshwanth, Chairman of Pragyan and final year (production) student of NIT, said that of the total number of students admitted into NIT, Tiruchi, 50 per cent quota was for Tamil Nadu.

At present, there were 814 students and out of them Tamil Nadu’s quota was 407.

But in this quota, Tamil Nadu students were fewer as they did not qualify to enter. Most of the seats are filled with students from other States.

“This is due to the fact that most of the students in Tamil Nadu, particularly in rural areas, are either not aware of the premier institutes and the admission process and even if they know, they think they can’t compete and enter.

Preparation

“Those who write State Board Examinations have this feeling more than Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) students. But they can compete if they have the preparation,” Mr.Yeshwanth said.

The booklet explains the preparation required for JEE-main and JEE-Advanced and how to successfully pursue the courses.

It contains guidelines for appearing in JEE (Main) 2015, list of facilitation centres, details of examination, seven steps to be followed to apply online and important tips.

“As the last date for application for JEE (Main) 2015 is December 18, 2014, students should start preparing now,” he said.

In the interaction that followed, one of the students asked whether the question paper for JEE will have questions more from CBSE syllabus? Mr. Yeshwanth said it was not so and Tamil Nadu State Board students could also answer them.

“This is only a misconception.

There are many students from Tamil Nadu State Board at NIT, Tiruchi, and they pass out with flying colours,” he added.

The Collector said that students could get good placements if they studied at NITs.
