The Thottiyam banana producer group, a private company which created a revolution by producing banana chocolates, has now embarked upon production of two more value-added products.

The products – ‘fruit and nut banana’ and ‘sweety banana’ are being marketed through the company. “Based on our successful experience, we have produced the fruit and nut banana which is mostly preferred by young mothers as it is more nutritious for their kids. The second product, the sweety banana, is a bit tastier as additional sweet had been added to it.

According to Manikutti Subramanian, Managing Director of the company, there has been a growing demand for the value-added products of banana not only in the domestic market but even abroad. The company has branded its products as ‘Yummy Banana’ and there has been an assured export to Dubai and Gulf countries.

The State government has also planned to include the value-added banana products in its nutritious noon meal scheme. “Officials have been keeping constant touch with our company so as to explore the possibility of including some value-added banana product,” he said. The company was also producing banana powder. “We do not even spare the skin of the banana fruit, which is dried and we are experimenting on its uses,” he said. The value added products are being produced using solar dryers.

“We have long-term strategy on developing a few more value-added products in banana,” says Ajithan, its founder.
