Adopting ‘lets mute the sound of plastic’ as their maxim, students of J.J. College of Engineering and Technology, creatively used a manufacturing engineering technique to say no to plastics while simultaneously vying a chance to enter the Limca Book of Records.
A total of 500 students from the college made 6, 246 paper bags in 30 minutes in an attempt to set a world record, recently.
The paper bag campaign titled TUTE was organised by Swayam, the Entrepreneurship Development Cell of the college.
Although the original target was 5,000 paper bags, students surpassed the number by a wide margin.
The feat was accomplished by employing a manufacturing engineering process – the moving assembly technique, said event coordinator S.Nadaraja Pillai. The production process was defined in ten steps.
The world record attempt was a move to encourage the use of paper bags, according to S. Sathiyamoorthy, principal, JJCET.
A. Ramakrishnan, designating officer, food safety and drug administration, S. Kowsalya Devi, headmistress, Government Higher Secondary School, Inamkulathur and S.Anabrasan, deputy headmaster, comprised the jury who witnessed the attempt. The record attempt has been submitted to the Limca Book of Records for certification.
