Work on clearing the seemai karuvelam trees on private lands commenced at Neravy near Karaikal on Thursday. Number of property owners with thick growth of seemai karuvelam trees on their vacant sites have come forward to uproot the species on their own, officials said.

About 200 acres of private land had been identified across the district with thick growth of seemai karuvelam. Adequate awareness campaign had been taken with a view to motivate the property owners to clear the karuvelam on their own.

Gita Anandan, MLA, inaugurated the clearing of the seemai karuvelam on the private land in Fathima Nagar near Neravy. She also planted a few saplings in the area.

Mahalingam, Deputy Director of Local Administration, was present.

Volunteers of National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of Jawaharlal Nehru Government Higher Secondary School at Nedungadu cleared seemai karuvelam at a number of areas in Nedungadu commune panchayat.

They were led by S. Kanagaraj, NSS Programne Co-ordinator. A. Nirmala, NSS Programme Officer, said that a total of 13,562 plants had been uprooted by the volunteers.
