Supporters of AIADMK Rajya Sabha MP R. Vaithilingam and “ousted” leader T.T.V. Dhinakaran clashed in Thanjavur, Ariyalur and Perambalur districts on Tuesday after the latter issued a statement “expelling” the former from the AIADMK (Amma).

Mr. Vaithilingam, who has been appointed deputy co-ordinator of the steering committee in the unified AIADMK, had on Monday announced that the party’s general council would be convened soon to expel jailed leader V.K. Sasikala.

Following this, Mr. Dhinakaran issued a statement on the letterhead of the AIADMK (Amma) expelling Mr. Vaithilingam from the primary membership of the party.

Mr. Vaithilingam said the action would not be binding on him.

“I will continue my party work,” he added. Meanwhile, the supporters of Mr. Vaithilingam expressed their ire by burning effigies and photographs of Mr. Dhinakaran in Thanjavur, Ariyalur and Perambalur districts.
