The Kollidam police have arrested two persons on the charge of abusing Srirangam Tahsildar Bhavani and preventing her from discharging her duty when she along with a team detected a group that was said to be involved in illegal mining of sand from the Coleroon near here on Tuesday.

The incident took place at Panayapuram on the city’s outskirts.

The police sources said the tahsildar accompanied by Revenue Inspector and Village Administrative Officer were on rounds when they noticed a group of five persons mining sand illegally from the Coleroon and loading them in a tractor-trailer.

When the officials attempted to stop, the group allegedly abused the tahsildar and pushed down the Revenue Inspector and the Village Administrative Officer.

The group escaped from the spot in the vehicle after detaching the trailer as it overturned, the sources said. On a complaint from the tahsildar, the Kollidam police booked a case against five persons.

Two of them – Anandraj and Vinoth Kumar – were arrested by the police who are on the look out for three others, including the Panayapuram panchayat vice-president Balamurugan and driver Bhaskar.
