The Tiruchirapalli City Corporation (TCC) has decided to conduct a trial run of the biomass gasifier crematorium established at Konakarai in Woraiyur shortly.
The crematorium, constructed at a cost of Rs.1 crore, would serve the residents of Woraiyur, Thillai Nagar, Ramalinga Nagar, Puthur, Kumaran Nagar and others. It is the fourth such crematorium in the city. While two are functioning at Oyamari, the third one is located at Karumandapam.
R.Chandran, Chief Engineer, Tiruchi Corporation, told The Hindu that all the construction work of the crematorium had been completed. It was generating optimum energy to incinerate the bodies. Fine-tuning works were on. It had been decided to conduct a trial-run within a few days after which the crematorium would be opened for public use. The operation and maintenance of the crematorium, procedure for using it, and user-charges would be decided shortly. Mr.Chandran said the entire process of cremation could be completed within 60 minutes to 90 minutes. Biomass gasifier is a non-conventional energy equipment that is both safe and eco-friendly. As it is easy to operate, the cost of operating the crematorium would be minimal. It had been decided to construct a wall around the four-acre crematorium to prevent encroachments. Efforts would be taken to create a green environment at the complex, Mr.Chandran said.
