The city would soon have three shelters for the homeless. The Tiruchirapalli City Corporation has taken up construction of the shelters at a cost of Rs. 2.55 crore.

The shelters are coming up near the Railway Junction, Madurai Road, and East Boulevard Road in the city. Civil works on the buildings of the shelters were in advanced staged.

Mayor A. Jaya, accompanied by N.S. Prema, Corporation Commissioner, inspected the progress of construction of two of the shelters coming up near the Railway Junction and the Chathram on Madurai Road on Tuesday.

The Centre would extend a financial assistance of Rs. 25 lakh for each of the shelters under the National Urban Livelihoods Mission and the remaining cost would be borne by the State government and the Corporation, an official release said.

The release pointed out that several homeless persons were taking shelter on the platforms on roadsides and beneath the bridges in the city and are exposed to the vagaries of nature. The corporation has conducted a survey to identify such homeless persons, who would be accommodated at the shelters.

Each of the shelters would accommodate 50 men and 50 women on ground and first floor buildings being constructed. The homeless shelters would have toilets and bathrooms, besides kitchen and dining halls. The homeless would be provided amenities such as beds at the shelters, the release added.

The shelters are expected to be declared open within the next couple of months, sources indicated.
