Three sentenced to life for killing pregnant woman

The Principal District and Sessions Judge here on Friday convicted and sentenced three persons to undergo life imprisonment for killing a pregnant woman near Pulivalam in the district in November 2010.

Those sentenced to life were the victim's husband R. Dhanapal (32), father-in-law Ramasamy and mother-in-law Sellamal.

A police press release here said Dhanapal who had married Gomathi (22) in 2008 tortured his wife demanding dowry. The woman's in-laws also tortured her constantly demanding dowry. The three assaulted Gomathi and murdered her.

The body of the woman was found in a partially burnt state in an open area near their house in Kuruvikaran kulam village.

During investigation, it came to light that the woman was four months pregnant. The Pulivalam police registered a case of murder and the trial was held in the Principal Sessions Court here. The three were lodged in the Central Prison here following the court order, the release added.
