Amid rising vehicular density and increasing road accidents on highways, the Tiruchi Rural Police has increased the number of highway patrol units in an effort to prevent accidents.

Three more highway patrol units have been deployed to patrol on specific stretches on the national and state highways falling within the district.

The introduction of the patrol units has increased its tally to 14 now. Eleven patrol units are already functioning in the district.

Police sources said the newly introduced patrol unit -12 has been deployed on the Thuraiyur road to patrol in the stretch from Manachanallur to Pulivalam.

Patrol unit -13 has been deployed to cover the stretch from Samayapuram Toll Plaza to Siruganur along the Tiruchi – Chennai national highway, while unit14 has been introduced to cover the stretch from Lalgudi Puvalur to Kallagam along the Tiruchi – Chidambaram national highway.

The additional patrol units have been deployed on the instruction of the Superintendent of Police, T. Senthil Kumar, police sources said. The objective behind increasing the number of patrol vehicles was to check accidents and prevent crimes on highways, said SP Senthil Kumar.

The patrol units have been asked to ensure that there was no parking on the roadside on the highways as it could potentially lead to accidents, said Mr. Senthil Kumar. The stretches have been divided and additional patrol units deployed on the specific sectors for effective patrolling, the sources said.

The vehicles would be equipped with walkie-talkie sets for faster communication. Each of these vehicles would have three police personnel who would work round-the-clock.
