Three girls were rescued from child marriages by officials of the Social Welfare Department acting in tandem with the Childline and police officials in the district over the past two days. All three marriages were to be solemnised on Wednesday, according to officials. In the first incident, a 17-year-old girl from a village near Marungapuri in the district was rescued by the officials on Tuesday evening. Acting on a tip off, the officials visited the girl’s house and rescued her. Her parents had planned to solemnise her marriage with a groom from Dindigul district. Another girl from Karigali near Musiri was rescued on Wednesday morning by the officials. The girl, also aged 17, was to be married to a boy from Sellipalayam.

In the third incident, the marriage of a 16-year-old girl of Edamalaipattipudur with a groom from Erakudi near Thuraiyur was stopped by the officials. The girl had just completed her Plus One.

All three girls were handed over to the Childline and later to the custody of the District Child Welfare Committee, district officials said.
