Three brothers drowned in the Coleroon at Thaneerpandal village near Lalgudi on Friday. The tragedy occurred in the afternoon when the three went to have a dip in the river.
Police gave the names of the victims as S. Karthikeyan (20), S. Bharani Kumar (14), and S. Senthil Nathan (13).
Karthikeyan was a third-year B.E. Civil Engineering student while Bharani Kumar and Senthil Nathan were studying in class 9 and 8 respectively in a government school at Lalgudi.
The three went to the river in the afternoon to take a dip when they drowned after venturing deep into the water body.
The three did not know swimming and were unaware of the depth, the police said. People alerted the fire fighters who retrieved the bodies sometime later.
The bodies were sent to Lalgudi Government Hospital for postmortem.
Lalgudi police are investigating.
