The temple city is all set to roll out the red carpet for Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami and his Cabinet colleagues, who are participating in the MGR centenary celebrations here on Wednesday.
Mr. Palaniswami is scheduled to inaugurate 105 works completed at a cost of ₹632.48 crore and lay the foundation for 43 new works to be undertaken at a total cost of ₹186.78 crore. He will also distribute government welfare measures worth ₹271.90 crore to beneficiaries.
The series of MGR centenary celebrations commenced in Madurai on June 30, and Thanjavur is the 27th district to host the event that seeks to showcase the contributions of late Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran to society and the people at large. His tinsel world achievements and service to the poor and the downtrodden are to be showcased at a photo exhibition at the Corporation Grounds behind the New Bus Stand.
Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam, Speaker P. Dhanapal, Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha M. Thambi Durai, Ministers, MPs, MLAs and AIADMK office-bearers are expected to participate in the programme. A huge pandal has been erected and decorated lavishly.
Briefing the media about the traffic and security arrangements, Superintendent of Police T. Senthil Kumar, counselled the beneficiaries and the public not to bring food packets, water bottles, baggage and inflammable articles to the venue on account of public safety. The organisers had made elaborate arrangements to cater to the public at the venue, he said.
Mr. Senthil Kumar also explained the traffic arrangements put in place for unhindered movement of the travelling public and those visiting the event from various directions.
The senior police official called upon the visitors to properly get acquainted with the diversions and parking lot arrangements and abide by the directions of the police personnel.
More than 3,500 police personnel from various districts have been deployed for security and bandobust duties in the city and the venue in particular.
Inspector General of Police, Central Zone, Varadaraju, and DIGs Bhavaneeswari, Loganathan and Nirmal Joshi, besides a host of SPs are camping in the city to oversee arrangements.
