Work on the renovation of Srirangam Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple is in full swing. With the painting of the gopurams and rajagopuram nearing completion, the authorities have now turned their attention to clearing the soot and dust at various shrines in side the temple.
The water wash is being given at Garuda Mandapam, Renga Vilas Mandapam, and Kambathadi Mandapam where huge deposit of soot and dust had discoloured the walls and ceiling. The use of camphor by devotees at Garuda Mandapam had resulted in blackening of the ceiling at this mandapam.
The renovation involved a tough task of maintaining the gigantic doors at various shrines, including the Thayaar Sannidhi, Vellai Gopuram, Renga Renga Gopuram, Nazhikettan vassal and ParamapadaVasal.
“We have been giving a facelift to the doors through ornamental works. The doors had not been maintained for several decades and the current work aims at not only proper upkeep but also beautification. It is a tough task to repair the tall doors,” say the source.
The doors at Vellai Gopuram, for instance, are18-foot tall and the Nazhikettan vaasal door,16 feet and Vadakku gopuram,17 feet.
Beautification of floors at various shrines has been another major work in full swing. Stone slabs from different parts of the State make up the new flooring.
Sources said the Annadhana koodam would get a gas pipeline connection. With the construction of a new ‘mandapam’ with a capacity of 1,000 persons, the gas pipeline would help in quicker preparation and supply of food to the devotees from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
