A temple dedicated to Sri Viswanathar and Sri Visalakshmi at Karai has been in ruins and has been facing a threat of collapse due to poor structural stability.

The worst hit is the wall of outer prakaram of the temple where a number of stone slabs had derailed from their original position. The threat is severe as the outer prakaram wall is close to Karai - Tiruchi road where a number of buses and mini buses are operated.

According to sources, some effort was taken for renovating the temple. Even the stone slabs were numbered before being dismantled.

But, the work could not be taken up for want of funds.

Special puja is performed on the New Moon Day when a large number of devotees visit the temple seeking the blessings of Sri Visalakshi for health and prosperity. “A special homam is performed when hundrds of devotees visit the temple on the New Moon Day.

This month, this monthly ‘homam’ would be held on Thursday. The thick growth of trees and bushes on the ‘vimanams’ and ‘rajagopuram’ pose a serious threat to the devotees,” say the villagers who want the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment Department to take immediate action for its renovation.
