The Aided College Teachers’ Association (ACTA) has appealed to the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, to pay “serious attention to the selection of Vice-Chancellors” for State-run universities. The VCs should be chosen in such a way that the incumbents could ensure efficiency and quality improvement, the association said in a resolution passed at its State executive meet in Salem on Sunday. The meeting opposed the University Grants Commission’s “hasty decision” of granting degree-awarding status to select autonomous colleges. It urged the UGC and the autonomous colleges to give up the decision and pay greater attention to the much needed curriculum reforms and quality improvement process to enable the student community meet global challenges.
The meeting, presided over by A.Raja, State president, appealed to the Principal Secretary, Higher Education Department, to advise the Regional Joint Director of Collegiate Education, Tiruchi, to implement government proceedings related to pay and service issues.
