First orientation for teachers even before start of academic year
The trimester system introduced this academic year seems to be helping teachers to complete portions in time.
After hiccups in the first term, the teachers could adapt well to the requirements of the system of evaluating students on the basis of summative and formative assessments, according to officials. At the primary level, the system of education has been termed as Simplified Activity Based Learning for class I to IV, and Simplified Active Learning Methodology for class V.
Teachers were given the first orientation on the system even before the start of the academic year. Experts and block resource teachers handled sessions during May to familiarise them with the new system meant to infuse joy into the teaching-learning process. Subsequently, training programmes were conducted mostly on Saturdays such that the schedule does not affect the working day.
The schools are required to complete 220 working days a year. Under the new system, the teachers are required to pay individual attention to students and maintain records of their scores in summative and formative assessments perfectly. As for the students, there is no burden as their learning is spread out in three independent terms. The State government intends to introduce trimester system for class IX from next academic year, official sources said.
Meanwhile, a three-day orientation programme for newly appointed primary teachers ended at Sri Mariamman B.Ed. College here on Wednesday.
The programme was designed to equip the appointees, who secured the post by virtue of their success in the Teacher Eligibility Test, to the teaching-learning methodologies that they need to adopt under the trimester system. A total of 216 primary teachers were appointed in the district and of them 210 joined service, official sources said.
They were exposed to multi-level training to handle the subjects in accordance with the physical, mental and psychological abilities of students by experts drawn from District Institute of Education and Training and Block Resource Teacher educators.
