Tamil University will utilise the Rs. 2 crore special grant announced by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for the university in the State budget for 2013-14 in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on Thursday for infrastructure development, M. Thirumalai, Vice-Chancellor, Tamil University, said here on Thursday.
He told presspersons that Tamil University was happy to hear the announcement. “National Accreditation and Assessment Council (NAAC) is going to visit the university for giving reaccreditation.
At this juncture, announcement of Rs. 2 crore as special grant by the government is “timely help” as we could improve the infrastructure ahead of NAAC's visit to University,” Dr. Thirumalai said.
Focus would be on improving building and other ambience in view of NAAC Committees’ visit to the university, he said.
“In 1995, the Chief Minister had given a special grant of Rs. 2 crore when eighth world Tamil Conference was held here for the university. She had been giving special grants every now and then for the improvement of the university. We thank the Chief Minister,” the Vice-Chancellor said.
He said that with Rs. 14 lakh provided by Tamil Nadu Government, an electronic Personal Computers and Dissertations Laboratory would be established in the university library. An Open Public Access Catalogue (index) would be provided with 10 computers and networking them.
He said that Indira Gandhi National Open University had given Rs. 30 lakh for distance education. Software for admission and examinations would be developed using the amount.
Already, office of the distance education in the university had been improved.
