‘Take up dredging works in irrigation canals’

May 31, 2014 10:56 am | Updated 10:56 am IST - TIRUCHI:

Farmers’ organisations have urged the district administration to dredge and renovate irrigation canals in the district.

Raising the issue at the meeting, R. Subramanian, deputy secretary, Cauvery Delta Farmers’ Welfare Association, said there was an urgent need to renovate and remove silt from all irrigation canals in the district.

Lack of funds

Since lack of funds is cited as a constraint, he urged the government to sanction adequate funds to enable the Public Works Department to take up the works.

Dredge canals

N. Veerasekaran, coordinator, Ayyan Vaical Pasanatharar Sangam, appealed to the district administration to take steps to dredge the South and North Ayyan Vaical, Kaduvai, Rajakadai, Mukkanthidal, and Athiyadi canals.

Mr. Subramanian demanded three-phase supply for agricultural connections for eight hours during the day and for 10 hours during nights in view of the poor storage at the Mettur reservoir and the likely delay in the release of water from the dam for irrigation.
