The super-speciality block being constructed within the sprawling Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital premises here is nearing completion, dean of the hospital R.Vallinayagam said on Monday.
The 400-bed block will accommodate 12 specialised departments including cardiothoracic surgery, gastro surgery, medical and surgical oncology, plastic surgery and neurosurgery besides facilities for trauma care.
Final works are on at the super-speciality block that has come up at a cost of Rs. 55 crore, Dr. Vallinayagam said. A new building to house maternity block with neonatal intensive care unit inside the GH premises was inaugurated on Monday by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa through videoconferencing.
Costing Rs. 7.12 crore, the multi-storeyed building is equipped with a full-fledged investigation and supportive facilities including ultra sound abdomen scan, mobile x-ray unit, 40 warmers, incubators and photo-therapy units to deal with neo-natal cases with a view to reduce infant mortality and maternal mortality.
A neo-natal emergency care ambulance service was launched on Monday to facilitate inter-facility transfer of babies from one government hospital to another or from a primary health centre to a government hospital. Equipped with non-invasive multi-parameters, the ambulance will be stationed at the Tiruchi GH. Dr. Vallinayagam said a proposal had been forwarded to establish a Centre for Excellence to deal with maternal and child care at a cost of Rs. 20 crore. Funds would be sought from National Rural Health Mission.
Plans are afoot to construct a modern mortuary at the GH at a cost of Rs. 2 crore to accommodate over 60 bodies at a time. The Vice Principal, K.A.P. Viswanatham Government Medical College, Tiruchi, M.A.Aleem, said a total of 5,246 surgeries have been performed at the Tiruchi GH under the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Insurance Scheme since the inception of the scheme.
Dr. Aleem said the intake of students for undergraduate admission in the medical college has been increased from 100 to 150 from 2013-14. A new postgraduate department of bio-chemistry has been started in the college from this year, he added.
