The general counselling for admission to arts, languages, commerce, and science courses in government arts and science colleges in central districts began on Monday.
Although the colleges had been asked to follow flexible dates for the counselling, they have been directed to complete the counselling process possibly within a week.
According to the office of Joint Director of Collegiate Education, students thronged in large numbers in most of the 24 government colleges in the region on the first day of counselling. In some colleges, priority was to fill the seats reserved for physically handicapped, sports, and ex-servicemen quota. In some other colleges, applications received for arts and language courses were taken up.
Dr. K. Kala, Joint Director of Collegiate Education, Tiruchi, told The Hindu that she had received inputs that response had been good in most colleges, where general counselling for arts and science courses began on Monday. Besides commerce, English and Tamil language courses had received good response. Instructions had been given to conduct the counselling on transparent basis.
On the first day of counselling, over 500 students turned up at Periyar E.V.R. College here for the arts courses such as English Literature, Tamil, and History. Of them, about 200 candidates were interviewed for 120 seats in English Literature. Although the response was good for all the courses, the officials said all students could not be given seats as the quota system had to be followed. Candidates were being called in batches from 9 a.m. based on the basis of cut-off marks.
P. Thamilmani, principal-In-Charge, Periyar E.V.R. College, said that more than 4,500 applications had been received for 750 seats, including the courses conducted on shift system, as against about 3,500 applications received last academic year. This had been suggested that the traditional courses had not lost their importance. It would continue to get its due share as usual.
Talking about widely preferred courses this year, he said that commerce, mathematics, physics, and chemistry had received good response.
The response for English Literature was good.
He said that counselling for commerce courses would be taken up on Wednesday and June 16 would be the last day for counselling.
