“Stop move to build dams across Cauvery”

March 20, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:42 am IST - TIRUCHI:

The Tamizhaga Eri Mattrum Aattru Paasana Vivasaayigal Sangam has urged the Union Government to prevent Karnataka from going ahead with its plan to build dams across the Cauvery at Mekadatu and Rasimanal.

In a statement issued here, its president P.Viswanathan said farmers in the delta region of Tamil Nadu have been disturbed over the sustained measures being taken by Karnataka to build dams during the past few years. The allocation of Rs.25 crore for the project by the Karnataka government has only heightened their anxiety. The move is intended to prevent the excess flow from Kabini dam going to Tamil Nadu. Already, the cultivable area in Tamil Nadu has shrunk owing to the water scarcity.

The final award of the Cauvery Disputes Tribunal has not been implemented and the Centre was yet to form the Cauvery Management Board and Cauvery Water Regulatory Authority. Under these circumstances, the Centre should immediately intervene and stop the Karnataka move to build dams across the Cauvery, Mr.Viswanathan said.
