Experience of practicing regularly on the synthetic hockey turf at the Anna Stadium here has stood the young hockey players of Tiruchi sports hostel in good stead.

They emerged victorious in the Bell Pins Cup State-level inter-school hockey tournament played at the synthetic hockey turf ground in Palayamkottai. The boys, who are students of Khajamian Higher Secondary School, represented their school in the tourney. Twelve school teams from different parts of the State took part.

According to the coach S. Karthikeyan, the sports hostel boys were determined to make up for the loss in the final of the previous edition of the tournament. “The matches were keenly contested and our boys played well to come up trumps,” he said, adding that the team scored 11 goals in the tournament conceding just two. Mr. Karthikeyan said that the boys were comfortable playing on the synthetic hockey turf during the tournament, after having practiced regularly on a similar facility at Anna Stadium here. “It was only our second tournament this academic year and it feels nice to have won a title already. The victory has boosted the confidence levels of the youngsters.”

The boys are now gearing up for State-level tournament to be held at Kovilpatti. “We are hopeful of continuing the good show,” Mr. Karthikeyan added. M. Gilbert Benjamin, manager, Tiruchi Sports Hostel, commended the efforts of team members and coach.
