Training should be imparted in physical education to students in schools alongside academics, Collector M. Vijayakumar has said.

Speaking at the valediction of the 15-day residential camp of the World Beaters Talent Spotting Scheme held at the Roever Higher Secondary School here recently, Mr. Vijayakumar said participation in sports and games helps students to improve their concentration thus enabling them indirectly to achieve success in academics. “Sports builds character.”

He said participation in sports activities paves the way for youngsters to develop leadership qualities and obedience in the long run. “Taking part in sports activities is one of the best ways to stay fit. It is important for youngsters to strike a balance between sports and academics,” he added.

He called upon physical education teachers to spot talented sportspersons and impart best coaching techniques to them. The camp saw the participation of 60 boys and girls of the district. He gave away certificates to the students in the presence of K. Varadarajan, chairman, Roever Group of Institutions, M. Rajan, Chief Educational Officer and C. Punniyamoorthy, District Sports Officer.
