Corporation Commissioner M. Vijayalakshmi has cautioned shops, marriage and other meeting halls in the city against using products made of plastic below 40 microns in thickness. In statement here, Ms. Vijayalakshmi pointed out that the corporation had banned stocking and sale of bags made of plastics below 40 microns in thickness. Violations would attract a penalty of Rs. 1 lakh. Tea, meat, vegetable and flower shops and vendors should not supply food products in such plastic carry bags. Over the past couple of days, checks were conducted at Puthur market and Big Bazaar Street and plastic carry bags were seized. Such checks would continue to be held across the city, she said in a press release.

Applications for admissions to the 14 undergraduate courses of the Periyar E.V.R. College in the city was distributed at the college currently and the last day for submission of filled-in forms is May 18, the college principal N. Selvarasu said in a release. The open admission counselling session for special category of students would be held on May 21, for arts courses on May 25, for commerce on May 26, and for science courses on May 28, the release added.
